Funeral Announcement - Amanda Cary Bailey
Amanda Cary Bailey’s soul passed into the loving arms of her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ on September 28, 2020. She died of complications from COVID-19.
Amanda was born on February 6, 1938 to proud and loving parents, Louis Andrew Cary and Lorene Hughes Cary in Yazoo City, Mississippi and lived for most of her years through high school at Sherwood on Wolf Lake. She attended Mississippi State College for Women (now MUW) in Columbus for one year, after which she married John Hayes Dent, Sr. of Kinkead Plantation on Eagle Bend Road, along the Yazoo River. With John, she gave birth to three adorable children, Mollie Cary Dent, John Hayes Dent, Jr. and Richard Hughes Dent. She spent her days raising children while John farmed with his twin brother, Jim.
In God’s providence, Amanda became a widow at the early age of 27. Later, in 1967 Amanda married Robert J Bailey (Bob) who became the fortunate husband and dad to a full-sized family. Bob and Amanda were married for more than 53 years and enjoyed raising the family, taking joy in numerous grandchildren and great grandchildren who were added to the fold over the years.
Amanda and Bob raised the children in First Presbyterian Church where she faithfully taught Sunday School to the high school class and many Ladies Bible Studies. In addition, Amanda was a popular and sought after ladies luncheon and retreat speaker throughout Mississippi and neighboring states. For many years, Amanda audited theology classes at Reformed Theological Seminary and held the unofficial title of having accumulated the most classroom hours and the least credit hours of any student ever attending RTS. She was known and well respected by many a young seminary student, awed by her knowledge of the subject at hand.
In Bob’s profession as a local banker and later as an executive officer at Reformed Theological Seminary, Amanda was a valuable asset and lent her beauty and glowing personality to every occasion.
Amanda is preceded in death by her parents, Louis Andrew Cary and Lorene Hughes Cary, husband, John Hayes Dent, Sr., daughter, Mollie Dent Stock, granddaughter, Margaret Amanda (Maggie) Jones and grandson, William Stokes Jones.
She is survived by her husband, Robert J. (Bob) Bailey, son, John Hayes Dent, Jr. (Carolyn); son, Richard Hughes Dent (Christina) and grandchildren, John Montfort Jones (Jessica), Annie Kinkead Dent, John Hayes Dent III, Cary Kathleen Dent, Margaret LaVergn Dent, Andrew Knox Dent and Robert Kinkead Dent; and great grandchildren, Mollie Kinkead Jones and Walker Stokes Jones.
Funeral service will be at 2:00 PM, Wednesday, September 30, 2020 at First Presbyterian Church, Yazoo City, MS with graveside to follow at Glenwood Cemetery under the direction of Stricklin King Funeral Home.
In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts are recommended to Reformed Theological Seminary for the Maggie and Stokes Jones Memorial Scholarship Fund, 5422 Clinton Blvd, Jackson, MS 39209; or The Voice of the Martyrs, 1815 SE Bison Rd, Bartlesville, OK 74006
