Hazel Estelle Ward Johnston died at her home on Sunday, August 29, 2021. She was born in Eden, MS, on October 22,1927, and lived most of her life in Yazoo City. She married James Johnston in 1945, and they were married for 67 years, until his death in 2012. Mrs. Johnston was longtime member of First Baptist Church in Yazoo City, where she had been a Sunday school teacher. She worked for the Mississippi State Department of Welfare for 30 years, retiring in 1992. She was also an avid gardener and was known to carry a shovel in the trunk of her car to dig up and transplant wildflowers. She was preceded in death by her husband, James Johnston. She is survived by two children, Travis Johnston of Eden, MS, and Cheryl Matthews of Little Rock, Arkansas, 5 grandchildren, 10 great grand children, and a sister, Ernestine Byrd of Madison, MS. There will be a graveside service at Glenwood Cemetery on Wednesday, September 1, 2021 at 2 pm. Stricklin King Funeral Home is handling the arrangements for Hazel Estelle Ward Johnston.
